What is a colonoscopy? An exam of the large intestine, also known as the colon. The exam is done with a tool called a colonoscope. The colonoscope is a flexible tube with a tiny camera on the end. This tool allows the doctor to view the inside of your colon.
The American Cancer Society recommends routine colonoscopies starting at age 50 for both men and women, even if they don't have any symptoms. Common reasons for a colonoscopy include:
- To determine the cause of abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, or a change in bowel habits
- To detect and treat colon cancer or colon polyps
- To take tissue samples for evaluation under a microscope—biopsy
- To stop intestinal bleeding
- To monitor response to treatment if you have inflammatory bowel disease
- To follow up on a family history of cancer or polyps
What is an EGD? EGD short for an upper GI endoscopy, and it is a test that uses a fiber optic scope to examine the esophagus, stomach, and upper part of the small intestines.
Your doctor may recommend the EGD procedure if you suffer from
- Abdominal pain
- Severe heartburn
- Persistent nausea and vomiting
- Difficulty swallowing
- Blood in stool or vomit, or dark black stool
- Abnormal x-ray or other examinations of the gastrointestinal tract
An EGD can diagnose a wide range of gastrointestinal issues including ulcers, tumors, polyps or inflammation.
What is hernia repair? A hernia forms when your abdominal wall weakens, bulges, or tears. The inner lining of the abdomen and small intestine can poke out of this weakened area. A hernia repair is a surgery to push the abdominal material back where it belongs and to repair the abdominal wall.
A hernia repair is done if the hernia is large and causing pain. Some hernias, called strangulated hernia, can cut off blood supply. Strangulated hernias require immediate hernia repair surgery. Without surgery, the hernia will not heal. The pain and size of the hernia usually increases over time.
Cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder. This procedure is now most often done laparoscopically. This is done through several small incisions in the abdomen and shortens recovery time. In some cases, the doctor may switch to open surgery. This involves a larger incision in the abdomen.
Gallbladder removal is recommended when a gallbladder is diseased or damaged. A diseased gallbladder can cause discomfort and complications in other digestive organs. This is often due to gallstones, which are crystals of bile that can form in the gallbladder. Sometimes, these get stuck in the ducts that bile normally flows through. This blockage in the ducts can damage the gallbladder, pancreas and the liver.
Excision of growths or tumors
The surgical removal or resection of an organ or body part is also called an excision. Excisions are recommended in a wide variety of cases ranging from the removal of a tumor, sections of a damaged organ or skin lesions. Depending on the type of excision this procedure can be inpatient or outpatient in nature.
