How do you know when you need a total ankle replacement

Total Ankle Replacement - also called Total Ankle Arthroplasty - is a surgery used to treat advanced ankle arthritis or pain and deterioration due to normal wear and tear or a previous injury. Orthopedic specialists perform this surgery at Logansport Memorial Hospital.

Orthopedic medicine is a specialty that focuses on injuries and diseases of your body's musculoskeletal system. This complex system, which includes your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves, allows you to move, work, and be active. Many people need to see an orthopedic doctor because of joint pain or immobility - particularly in joints such as the hip, knee and ankle. Our orthopedic department offers total joint replacement to help people relieve pain, correct issues and resume their normally active life.

How do you know if you need a Total Ankle Replacement?

Those with arthritis in the ankle joint or constant pain in their ankle from previous injuries or normal aging, are typically good candidates for total ankle replacement. If conservative measures such as anti-inflammatory medication, braces, physical therapy and modification to physical activity do not provide relief, your doctor may recommend consulting with an orthopedic specialist to discuss ankle joint replacement.

Total ankle replacement is surgery that requires a short hospital stay and a period of non-weighbearing in either a cast or boot to allow the implanted joint to heal properly. After healing, physical therapy is often recommended to promote a return to your normal range of motion.

Total ankle replacement at Logansport Memorial

We’re pleased to welcome Alex Lebrija, DPM, FACFAS to the Logansport Memorial Physician Network. He is a board-certified podiatrist offering comprehensive treatment for a variety of foot and ankle issues, including heel pain, arch pain, flat feet, bunions, and more. Additionally, he is board-certified in Rearfoot Reconstruction and Ankle Surgery which enables him to provide total ankle replacements.

Dr. Lebrija enjoys taking time to listen to each of his patients, to fully understand the foot and ankle problems they face and to find a solution that can address it for them. As a former college athlete, he experienced how serious foot pain can be. He received a pair of orthotics that helped him stay out of pain while playing football. Because of that experience, Dr. Lebrija also enjoys sports medicine and working with local high school athletes, helping them get back to participating at their full potential.

Make an appointment with Dr. Lebrija or any of our orthopedic surgeons to discuss your total ankle replacement or other foot and ankle problems.
