The first baby born in all of Cass County for the new year was delivered and cared for at Logansport Memorial Hospital. Emalynn Hope Birnell, born to mom Stephanie Birnell at 2:52 p.m. on Sunday, January 1, 2012, weighed an even nine pounds and was 21 inches long. She joins two older siblings, sister Skyah, 7 years, and brother Chance, 5 years.
The New Year’s baby is the recipient of many generous gifts, donated by local merchants around Cass County. Among the items given are gift cards from local establishments, including Arnold’s Fine Jewelry and Gifts, Bob Evans, D&R Fruit Market, J.C. Penney, and Martin’s Super Market. Healthcare items from Community Pharmacy and stuffed animals from the Logansport Memorial Hospital Gift Shop also accompany the array of items placed in the wagon given by Logansport Pediatrics in the Logansport Memorial Physician Network.
“This has been a whole new start to my life,” comments Stephanie. “I have a lot of new things happening. Bringing Emalynn into the world on New Year’s Day is amazing, because of the symbolism for me. It’s a new year, with a new baby, and new life.”
Jade Herr, the patient care coordinator for the Family Birth Center, also noted the enjoyment of the event for the entire hospital staff. “We love caring for all mothers and babies, but the anticipation of the arrival of the New Year’s baby is always very exciting. It’s great that the entire community can be involved with it as well, through the donation of gifts and necessary items for the new baby and their family. We are always glad to be a part of it!”
