Logansport Memorial Hospital has partnered with the Cass County Reading Railroad and the United Way of Cass County to open a Literacy Center at the Walton Public Library for the children in southern Cass County. The Walton Literacy Center will be open on Thursdays from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. and will be providing early learning activities, geared towards children ages 3-8 years old.
The Walton Literacy Center will open for its first day on Thursday, March 8, and parents are welcome to bring their children to work side-by-side on fun, hands-on, early learning activities. The weekly Literacy Center is designed to help children build their early literacy and early learning skills, through engaging activities that highlight alphabet and number recognition, fine motor and gross motor skills, reading and writing development, and school readiness proficiencies.
The Literacy Center is also designed to help parents learn how to be their child’s first teacher. There is no other person more influential in a child’s educational success than their parent, therefore parents need to be engaged in their child’s learning experiences from an early age. At the Walton Literacy Center, parents will have the opportunity to gain resources and experiences that will help them serve as their child’s first and most important teacher.
“The Walton Literacy Center is designed to help strengthen children’s early literacy skills in a fun and dynamic way, while also helping parents learn how to be their child’s first teacher,” explains Nikki Reed, Cass County Reading Railroad Coordinator. We want children to be excited about reading and learning, and we want their parents to help foster that excitement. Our overall goal is to provide an environment that makes learning contagious, both for the child and for the parent."
Logansport Memorial has sought to partner with this initiative because we value education and its role in making future leaders successful. “We are pleased to be able to bring this educational resource to the Walton community and southern Cass County through the formation of this partnership,” notes David Ameen, Logansport Memorial Hospital President and CEO.
“Education is critical for the future well-being of our community, and we will strive to do whatever we can to encourage lifelong learning."
"Our involvement with educational initiatives can be used to instill healthy lifestyle habits at early ages as well,” he says. “With so many components involved in a child’s educational experience, we want to educate our children by promoting the importance of health and wellness at any age and teaching them how it will benefit their learning experience. If these children can begin to form healthy habits now, it will serve them well in addition to their education as they mature and grow, and we want to be a part of that.”
There will also be an open house held in honor of the Walton Literacy Center on Thursday, March 15 from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. at the Walton Public Library and anyone from the community is welcome to attend.
